Is there an ideal garden for dogs?
Good gardening and dogs have never really gone hand in hand and anyone trying to make a lawn and keep a dog at the same time will have run into problems. Dogs pee, dogs scratch and they also love to dig huge holes – all of which destroy fine lawn areas.
So, is there a garden that can resist dog damage? The answer is yes and it’s also ecological!
Beautiful, Mediterranean style gravel gardens can withstand the effects of dog urination, which creates those huge yellow and ultimately dead patches on green lawns. I have had two dogs, one female and one male and I have also got a Mediterranean style gravel garden instead of a high maintenance green lawn in my back yard. Neither of these dogs have ever been interested in digging holes in the gravel garden as there is a strong, nylon dividing fabric that divides the gravel from the soil underneath thus preventing any kind of hole digging.
There is clearly no risk of any yellowing lawn problems because the high maintenance lawn has been replaced by the low maintenance gravel garden and this can be just as attractive and just as comfortable to walk on as a standard green lawn. Clearly the choice of gravel is essential regarding the comfort and a river-washed gravel is smooth and can easily be walked on in bare feet during the summer.
Gravel gardens also require very little water and are therefore excellent for the environment, at least in comparison to standard gardens with lawns that have a high requirement for water, around 6 litres per m2. Gravel gardens do not require mowing with a petrol driven mower and are therefore more ecological than a standard lawn area. You will also have more time on your hands as gravel gardens are basically maintenance free!
